So tell me I can't or won't do something and it motivates me to do it.
I think I've just learned that about myself.
I've been wanting garden again for a while now but time has gotten away from me; so this afternoon when I told my family I was wanting to get my gardening again, their joking comments have spurred me on.

So now I need to:
#1. weed and prep my garden, this may and most likely will require having soil delivered
#2. decide what I am going to plant and start the seeds

Prelim list of what I want to plant, I used this guide:
eggplant
carrots (in the ground by March)
cucumbers
tomatoes
pumpkins (March-April)
pole beans (I seem to always plant bush)

Squash Update

I picked my first harvest of 3 squash.

Here is where I gutted a small part of one of them to save the seeds. I am going to try my hand at preserving the seeds year to year--- we'll see how this one goes.
Here's the best part....
I used my squash to make my mom's yummy squash muffin recipe, go here to get the recipe and make it for yourself-- it's yummy.

Yellow squash- I can't wait to make my mom's yellow squash muffins with these.

Cucumbers. Pickles coming as soon as we have enough and with 9 plants I'm sure to have enough!
I've also started a bunch more seeds.

More onion, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers... this year my goal is to have a continual supply of veggies.

Spacing out the plants start time should allow for a longer harvest season.

I am also hoping to kill a large area on the side lawn and plant several rows of corn.

Justin has proven to be my son.

Yesterday he informed me he wanted to eat healthier, more fruits and veggies and he asked that they be natural, homegrown- no pesticides :)

Bloomin' Broccoli and Hidden Cauliflower

I really can't remember if I ever showed you guys what a broccoli plant looks like it your let it go to flower.
We do afterall, eat the flower buds when we eat a head of broccoli.
Each time I grow this green yumminess I just can't help but let 1 or 2 plants go to bloom.
These beautiful flowers attract the bees and are oh so pretty.

And then there is cauliflower. When I buy cauliflower and broccoli at the store I just group them together as "heads" and expected them to grow on a plant the same way.

Well, they do...

and they don't.

Broccoli grows straighter up on a stalk while cauliflower stays a little more hidden and covered up.

Kind of like us as Christ followers.

A beautiful end product yet the end product doesn't always take the same path getting there- may we never forget that.

May we love one another as we grow in the way God planned for us each to grow.

Large Garden- New Soil

My large garden has certainly been around the longest, sat empty the longest and been the biggest weed mess to control.
I have always dreamed of having a few yards of grade A topsoil delivered into it's bed but finances have never allowed...
until this year.
What a joy it was to spread this dirt around, I just love the smell of fresh soil.

I first laid out my planting, yellow squash (for muffins), zucchini, cucumbers and cantaloupe. The plan it for all these viney plants to grow outside the bed on trellises, still to be made, to free up the inside of the bed for tomatoes, onions and beans.

I've been watering daily and planted seeds last week with hopes of their peaking through the dirt soon. I may buy some tomato plants at the farmers market this weekend.

So come July my garden seems to go places I never intended for it to go.

With good long sunny days, a few good months of watering and love behind it my garden reaches it's peak.

I harvest and it still has more to give, only I fizzle out.

Maybe it's the week I'm gone each July or perhaps it's the oppressive Florida heat in July.

Either way here's the garden in July:

So August has been digging out and cleaning up my garden beds.

Only I've only gotten around to cleaning out one of them.

Let's see if time allows for a late summer and fall planting?! I hope so!

Corn, Cantaloupe and Peppers

Remember this bed? This is my original garden bed, the largest and the last to get plantings! I have 4 rows of corn and three mounds of cantaloupe. The area on the left- that's looks scrubby and yucky- well that area now has peppers!
Here's the bed 2 weeks ago before it was totally weeded out, but you can kind of see the peppers in.

Here's the bed now! The corn is doing great and the cantaloupe is off the chain. I've had to get creative to keep the cantaloupe away from the peppers. Speaking of peppers they are doing OK, I lost about half the crop I planted, but I have 5 good strong plants and 2 on the verge??

OH and I have to share this deal!! I have been looking for a pond for the front of the house. The roof line forms a valley that empties right into the corner of my front yard and right outside 2 windows. I've always had a rain barrel there to catch the rain and then use it to water my plants. Well, last week at Lowes we found this baby: we saved over $30 and it was a great deal so we snatched it up!! Now to get digging and put this in the ground.... next adventure: turtles and other pond type fun!

Top right corner is my cucumber plants in April, to the right are two stakes with strings running from the bed to the stakes for the cucs to grow on.

Different angle but this is my cuc plant now. I've added more stakes in the ground and put plastic down to maybe help slow the grass growth underneath.

I also had to move the oregano. You'll see it now at the bottom center of this bed, the cuc plant was growing over the top of it.

My failed attempt at onions has been a success at scallions.

So I've been somewhat busy in my garden.
I've been a little reoccupied with my life outside the garden but I did manage to finally, after 3 years get my large garden area planted.

I May Have Lost All New Seedlings

OK so I left my seedlings outside last night and the temperature dropped briefly to 39 degrees.
Ugh. Here's a germination chart that doesn't shed much hope on the future of these seedlings.

I am banking on a hunch that the seeds will do OK, praying the ground they are in stayed warm enough??

We'll see.
I should probably get going on some more new plantings.

Composting!

This whole composting thing is new to me. I think I have a few issues with mine.
First, I added some soil to it a while back and don't think that was the best decision, oh well, I'm learning.
Also I don't think it gets enough water.

For now it's gonna have to move along as it is, better than no compost!
I also turned the pile.

First, I mixed everything by raking the pile out of the compost bin.Next, I flipped my bin over on it's side, then mixed and raked the pile back over to it's original spot.

Lastly, I flipped the bin back over and closed the gate!

It is about time to start a new compost bin, which I will build closer to my large garden bed this time.

Well gotta run-

I am excited for Spring and the growing season!

Seeds In and New Soil Down

Today was a great day to be out in the garden! I got out my seeds, soil, and containers and set up shop on the front table.
I mix a combo of cow mature soil and compost soil.

I used it to freshen up my existing beds. This one has spinach, cauliflower and 1 small broccoli.

And this bed. I have allowed this broccoli plant to go to flower for two reasons, 1. I want to see what it looks like and 2. I would like to make harvest my own seeds.
**have realized I need more plants to cross pollinate, I only have two so we'll see??

I then planted seeds for 12 red cherry tomato plants, 6 big boy tomato plants, 8 parsley, 6 cucumber plants.

Celery

It has been said if you can grow celery, you are a true gardener. Well, so far, so good. Now I need to find ground space. Finding ground space means one of two things: either build a new bed, or get into revamping my original, very large bed. Hmmm... I gotta get on it and soon!

More on Broccoli

More broccoli went into the ground about a week ago. I had to get my little seedlings into space where their roots had room to stretch out! Some went into containers... others into the ground where my first crop of broccoli once grew.

The old broccoli plants have been pulled out and are now composting away.

And here is another beauty we ate, that's about 6 inches across. Yummy, I used the mini-crock I got for Christmas to mix up some Velveeta and rotel, dip fresh cut broccoli into it and we had a nice little snack this last week.

Baby Veggie Pictures

These were all planted from seed on December 18, 2009.
They are all 24 days from seed planting.

Here are the cauliflower (top left)- should go into the ground in the next 2-3 weeks and should be ready for picking near the end of Feb/early March
Broccoli top 3 large containers- should go into the ground in the next 2-3 weeks.
celery, smallest sprouts- when they are 3 inches tall I will transplant in the garden, they should mature around the week of April 11th
Spinach bottom row- these mature quick in 40-50 days so I need to get these babies outside soon. They should be ready for eating the end of this month or the beginning of Feb.
And my second box of broccoli only, they are surviving thankfully.

After typing all of that I need to get crackin' on garden space.

I have the structure of a new bed built, I just need to get the soil to fill it. Now that I think about it, that bed will not hold all of the above, so...

...I have a large old bed I put in years ago that ended up being too big, perhaps it's time to bring it back to life.
For right now these baby veggies, as I call them, are sitting in my front south facing window. See below post for more words :-)

Garden Update

I need to post pictures but a commentary will do for now.
The recent week or so of cold weather and frost has done a number on my garden experience.

I've brought all my seedlings inside, and they are doing quite well. I forgot one day and left them out of the sun and they beagn to look alittle sad so I moved them up onto my computer desk because it has a wonderful south facing window. They like the sun!

Broccoli has been weeded down to a few in a pot and the spinach, cauliflower and celery are all making an appearance from up out of their dark earth.

Outside my pepper plant did not survive the freeze but broccoli is still going strong- good because cold weather is what it likes, and the onions have weaved up through making a nice strip down my garden.

Well off to run errands, garden is good- sunny and warm today!

Jack Frost Comes to Town

We had a sprinkling of snow/sleet today.
Some stayed in the valley of our roof.
It also collected on my plant coverings:

And the frost has done a number on my Mexican Petunia, but never fear this baby will come back with a vengeance.

Actually I've used the cold weather to help in my weeding. This Mexican Petunia will be one of those plants that gets the heck trimmed out of it. Actually we may even pull this whole invasive plant up.

Ugh, that's hard for me cause I love this plant. It's daily fresh blooms remind me so much of God's grace and mercy in my life; but, it's invasive properties and the fact that it sits on top of our septic tank- roots and tanks don't blend well- makes it high on the "get rid of" list.

I have enjoyed the cold weather but have noticed I become a wimp in the cold. It really takes me a good deal of courage to get out into it, but when I do, the cold air is refreshing.

My broccoli is getting BIG!
So cool and so exciting.
But that's about all that's going on there right now.

I hope to get cauliflower and some other stuff in the ground by this weekend, I want to utilize the 12 month growing season and cooler days.

Meanwhile...
I stopped by my friend Kimies last week and picked fresh lettuce, hers tasted so much better than mine, basil and eggplant.
Her broccoli is farther along than mine and so I got excited to the size mine are going to be! wow i just said the word mine a gazillion times righ there...

It's kind of a surprise growing certain veggies.
The growth process is fun to watch.
I have never grown broccoli before so it was fun figuring out how and where the edible part of the vegetable was gonna grow.

Carrot, Mint and Tea

I harvested 1 carrot today!
I think the others may be ready but I dug up one and will eat it before I go any further. It was so much fun to dig this little baby out of the ground. I was just checking for the top and seeing if it was over 3/4 inch in diameter...
I was so excited to see that it was!!!

Here's a shot of the whole garden, you can see the large green carrot tops over taking the place. My broccoli is also coming right along, you can see it in the front and left side of the garden. I also clipped the lettuce right down to the ground and will dig it up after I see what it does.

I also have decided with the lemon balm I have I need to start making our own ice tea. I clipped some leaves today and made some hot tea, yummy I might say!

My next project is to get my second raised bed ready for new plantings. Steve built it for me now I need a little time to prep it for plantings!

Thought I would share this picture of my lettuce plant. You know the one that made it. Doesn't it look amazing?! Now I need to investigate how and when I can harvest it! I also am happy to show my tomato plant:

I must admit that did not plant this plant, I bought it last weekend at the farmer's market. The family will be happy for "real" size tomatoes instead of the cherry tomatoes I planted in the summer.

I have decided that I will use this blog to post pics of my kitty cats! My outside cat Toby (not shown) is my garden cat so they fit in on this blog. This is Jack, Crazy Jack Sparrow. If you're a cat fan than you'll appreciate this shot of him all stretched out, if you're not a cat fan stop reading now.

And did I mention we have 5 baby kittens? Well we do, they live in the Kitty Corral in the living room.

Birthday Time In My Garden

I pulled weeds this morning.

Funny how they sneak up on me. One minute my eye doesn't catch them and the next minute- bam, they are there. I think life can be that way, one day everything is fine and then - bam, you get hit with something.

When that happens I find it best to start one by one, digging to the root of the weed and pulling it out. When I'm lazy and I don't pull the root it always manages to come back bigger and tougher next week.

Lord I pray that daily I would be aware of the weeds in my life and have Your strength to get to their roots and put them in Your compost pile in heaven.
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I'm about;
See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong—
then guide me on the road to eternal life. Amen

I was told lettuce was easy to grow. So easy that this is the only head that made it. So far, so good.
Without Fluff in the garden I can get lonely, here is Toby our outside cat who sticks around when he wants.

Welcome.

I love the outside.
In NH the mountains, hills, rocks and streams always got my attention.
In Oklahoma the flat prairie, tumbleweed and red dirt peaked my fancy.
Here in Florida the fact that things rarely slow down their growing keeps me outside.

This is a place to keep track of my outside home activities.

Veggie garden, flower garden, decorative items, plants, lizards and more!

I have a master plan for our property and hope to follow its progress on this blog.

Gardening Early June 2009

I turned the old sandbox/pool area in to a tee pee for beans and a cucumber patch.
I plan to enlarge it using raised beds at diff heights.
The front bed has changed since we chopped the hibiscus short.

I used the coquina rock to make a wall border, still in need of come more rock.

I bought cutting flowers and now they are blooming again. I have never grown these type of flowers before.

I planted extra beans and put some in a container for now?

I plan to spend more happy time here. I learn so much about God when I am gardening. I realize it's hard on Him when he has to tend us.

Gardens are like sheep: they both need regular care.

Spring Tour

With working this year the time I spend in the yard seemed to always be put on the back burner. Yesterday I had a good amount of time and took some pictures.

Here's the main vegetable garden layout, still waiting for a large load of soil. The plan is to start with only a small portion and then add on as time and years allow. I originally thought about a wooden fence to keep the critters out but realistically I'll need farm fence or chicken wire. Oh and a scarecrow!!

Until then here's my container gardening. I have 2 tomato plants, a strawberry bush, yellow squash (for muffins) and Greek oregano.

Here's my live oak sapling. I hope to plant it for some shade, and raking leaves, once it's big enough. After hurricane Charlie visited in 2004, along with his other 3 "friends", we lost every tree on the cleared part of our lot, I'd like to replace them. I have 2 other saplings growing, hopefully to sell or give away when they're ready.

The Plumeria plant that will eventually grow into a tree and will be the focal point for this little garden area, nicknames the tri-area.

Here's the flower garden when I first planted it a year ago.

Here is is today! (the large stuff on the right, actually weeds... I'll have Steve trim the whole lantana and weeds back before I even begin to weed.)

Fluff and the periwinkles, which are great for cutting. They will last a good week or more with new blooms keeping the bouquet fresh. They also reseed quickly and easily. I'm sure they're invasive and exotic- those are the types of plants I seems to grow best!!

Fluff after a cat walked by, and he's a little grey loking becasue I shaved him the other day!!

The Mexican petunias aren't flowering as full this spring. I took this pic to point out the lighter color on these leaves... it's silver spray paint!

The Mexican beach pebble we layed around. Notice the bland grey brick, the house is still two-tone brick... someday as soon as the boys quit eating we'll settle on a color and paint the place! Glad no neighbors can see the place otherwise we may hear from code enforcement...

SO it's been awhile since I've updated some pictures of my butterfly garden. With my being gone, and busy over this latter part of the summer I haven't had much of a chance to even be int he garden much. Then with the week of rain we got it made it hard to weed and mow and such. So a few hours yesterday brought my garden back to life, somewhat.

Notice you can't even see the coquina rock border, and those chairs- I've never liked the chairs, they have got to go.

A close-up of my periwinkles, which until last week I thought were something else, I just don't remember what I thought they were?

I've trimmed them back and rooted them and hope to get them planted nicely all around the back of the butterfly flowers, which by-the-way, I have NO butterflies to speak of- yet.

How could I post without an updated picture of my plumeria's. They are doing great! Of course the ones still in the pots have not bloomed yet- I know at least one of them is orange. So that'll be my next project- to get these all in the ground. Until them here's the big boy that was already int he ground when we moved in:

My garden is coming along nicely. I wish I could show some pictures, I just have to download them. I have several so it'll look nice.

The butterfly garden is close to being done, I moved some plants in the area in front of the butterfly garden where my next "outcropping" will be- I'm calling this area the tri-area. I also plan to plant a plumeria tree there with this other reddish plant we have. I'll make another coquina rock border!

Also planted some pencil plants near the back of the house- since the pool is going this area will become grass, I'm looking forward to it.

Weeding Follows Vacationing

After returning from a week away on a missions trip, life took a few weeks to get back into. I finally made it back to the garden and did a bunch of weeding.

I also returned to about 6 lantana plants my neighbor gave me. I managed to put one in the ground after weeding.

I'm thinking I'll need a new bed to place the others in.

I'm excited, my butterfly garden is coming along nicely.

Have also been having some great blooms from my plumeria- still only from the white one. Not sure what color the others are. I can't wait to find out.

Plumerias

So my plumeria plants are doing great!

The large one (in the picture above) was already in the ground when we moved in and has been the only one to bloom, so far. It bloomed last year and again this year!

Here is a picture of my current flowers -I only wish I could have a scratch and sniff feature on this blog, the smell is divine!

I've started several other plumerias, one is a piece that broke off from the main plant and the others came from different sources; mainly from the garden clipping trash of my aunt. The great thing about this plant is that when a piece breaks off, all you need to do is stick it in the ground! My kind of planting!

There are 5 baby plants in the picture above and now i just need to do some research on where the best place to place them in the ground?

I like to garden. This is the story of my garden. I hope that you enjoy this journey of mine.

My first step was to come up with a master plan of what I wanted my yard to look like in the end. That was and is a work inprogress but I did it! Now where to start? I decided to start with the butterfly garden on the east side of my house, it's an area where the kids don't frequent and the animals tend to stay away from, that was until I began to garden there!

So far I've dug up some of the ground and gone with some natural flowers that had seeded themselves there. I then added some lantana and something else. I'm not really sure what iam doing, but I sure do enjoy it!
